Fulbright Program
Educational and Cultural Programs:
The Fulbright Program: Ghana is one of the leading beneficiaries of U.S. Government-funded educational and cultural programs around the world. The Fulbright Program was established in 1946 under legislation introduced by then Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas to promote "mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries of the world." The Fulbright Program is active in 35 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, and remains a key opportunity for students and scholars interested in the U.S.-Africa exchange experience. Hundreds of Americans and Ghanaians have benefited from this program over the years. Furthermore, the Education Advising Center at the Embassy assists Ghanaian students who seek admission to U.S. colleges and universities. The amount of financial aid awarded to Ghanaian students last year totaled $4.8 million for undergraduates plus $2.7 million for graduate students. Approximately 3,000 Ghanaian students are studying in the United States.
