Ghanaian Scholars Receive US$ 5 Million to Study in U.S.
In order to encourage mutual understanding and strengthen the excellent relations between Ghana and the United States, scholarships are made available each year by the U.S. Government for Ghanaian citizens to study in America. For the 2008/09 academic year alone, about 100 Ghanaian students received approximately US$ 5 million in new scholarship funding to study at colleges and universities in 44 states across the U.S. While much of the funding is granted by the institutions themselves, the United States Government also provides a significant amount for Ghanaians of exceptional ability. These include the Youth Exchange Student program, the Community Colleges Initiative, Fulbright scholarships, and Humphrey Fellowships. Almost 3,000 Ghanaians are enrolled currently for study at U.S. institutions of higher education.
On June 3rd U.S. and Ghanaian students, researchers, teachers and others gathered for a reception showcasing these programs and informing the public about how they may become eligible to receive such funding.
