USS NASHVILLE ARRIVES IN SEKONDI AS PART OF AFRICA PARTNERSHIP STATION 2009

The USS Nashville (LPD 13) will be at the Sekondi Navy Base as part of Africa Partnership Station (APS) for an extended port visit. Africa Partnership Station is an international initiative developed by Naval Forces Europe and Naval Forces Africa which aims to work cooperatively with U.S. and international partners to enhance maritime safety and security for the continent of Africa. Nashville’s APS mission is focused on operations in West and Central Africa.
There will be many opportunities for media to see first-hand the training that will be taking place. Daily classes and training for Ghanaian maritime forces will be offered. The training will primarily focus on developing and maintaining maritime security and safety.
In addition to the training that will take place aboard the ship, humanitarian and medial outreach programs will occur at shore-based sites. Medical and dental outreach programs, including Project Hope, will be at the Naval Base Clinic through Feb. 28. Community relations projects will happen on a daily basis at the Effia Nikwanta Hospital and Naval Base Basic School.
The focus of the deployment is to provide sustained, focused training and multinational and organizational collaboration on a regional scale. Africa Partnership Station provides a unique venue to align efforts being made by various agencies and non-governmental organizations from Africa, the United States and Europe.
