Important Security Information for Visitors and Students Traveling to Ghana
While Ghana is a vibrant gateway to West Africa and a stable country in the
region, it is important to remember that personal security precautions one
would normally observe in the United States also apply in Ghana. Students
and tourists should be aware that several incidents of muggings and
robberies have occurred in Accra in recent weeks involving American
citizens. Security measures such as traveling in groups and minimizing
travel at night should be observed. In addition, travelers and students
are reminded that in a mugging or robbery, whether in the United States,
Ghana or another country, it is always advisable not to engage in any kind
of struggle. In Ghana, victims who resist attackers run a high risk of
physical injury.
All travelers to Ghana should register with the U.S. Embassy's Consular
Section, which can be done online or in person at the American Citizen
Services window at the Consular Section, Osu, Accra.
In addition, student groups are asked to contact the Public Affairs Section
at pressaccra@state.gov and provide basic information on their intended
program such as number of students and length and place of stay. At a
student group's request, the Public Affairs Section can arrange for group
embassy briefings, including security information.
